I performed this week in LAB3 at the Image Factory Art Foundation in Belize City. The LAB is a two-week experimental art project in the gallery curated by Kate Numi Usher, where artists create work in the space for display or performance within a 48-hour period. It is a wonderful project and I am grateful to have participated in it again this year.
It’s been a long time since I’ve performed, and my piece was mostly improvisational. I used it as an opportunity to play, explore and see what comes up. I scheduled my performance for Tuesday the 19th, on the full moon. Nina Simone, Oshún, Yemaya and the ancestors were my inspirations.
Doing this piece was incredibly healing for me. I didn’t know where it would take me, and there were some interesting surprises. The audience was small, the space intimate. It felt so good to sing, to move, to share. It was a reminder of the joy I feel in creating. It was truly an offering of love.
You can see my performance and the work of other artists in LAB3 here.
