The Life of Seeds: On Gratitude

I’m keeping a gratitude journal this month. It’s an ongoing list in my little notebook of what I receive every day. Even though it’s only day four, I’ve racked up quite a few things, some monetary and some not – the discount I got on vegetables from my favorite stand at the market, the email inviting me to present a long-time performance project in a group show at a gallery in New York, the text sent to me this morning with the encouraging words I needed to hear right at that moment.  Continue reading “The Life of Seeds: On Gratitude”

Holding, Healing, Releasing: Full Moon In Taurus

seashore

I spent the weekend at home writing a research report about the needs of lesbian and bisexual women in Belize. It took a tremendous amount of effort. For days since the election results I couldn’t find the mental or emotional energy to do much beyond the basics. But yesterday I was grateful to have that report to focus on. It reminded me of who I am, what I value, and why I do the work I do. Continue reading “Holding, Healing, Releasing: Full Moon In Taurus”

Within And Without: Finding Balance In Work & Life

One of the reasons I moved to Belize was because I wanted a slower pace. Living in my hometown of New York, where it felt like every minute needed to be scheduled, had worn me out. Between working to pay bills, finding time to spend with the people I love and taking care of my own needs, it all seemed to be one big rush, and never enough time to really enjoy my life. With the rising costs of living in the city – financially and emotionally – I was stretched too thin. Continue reading “Within And Without: Finding Balance In Work & Life”

Asking & Receiving: New Moon In Leo

I’m in a reflective mood this week. It’s the start of a new month – my birthday month – and I’ll be turning 40 in a few weeks. I’m thinking a lot about what I want the theme for August to be and how I want to consciously enter this next decade of my life. There will be celebrations – my girls are coming down to Belize from the States to bring in my solar return with me. There will be revelry and shenanigans. I’m so looking forward to that. I performed this week in LAB3 at the Image Factory Art Foundation in Belize City.  The LAB is a two-week experimental art project in the gallery curated by Kate Numi Usher, where artists create work in the space for display or performance within a 48-hour period. It is a wonderful project and I am grateful to have participated in it again this year. Continue reading “Legacy/Love at LAB3”

The Practice: Part 3

Tonight’s new moon in Gemini is a shift and the beginning of a new cycle. I’m getting into the energy and did a clearing ritual today. I smudged the apartment, Ro and myself with sage, refreshed my crystal altar, and used lavender essential oil and Reiki symbols to cleanse our space. I sat outside to reflect in my journal and clarify my intentions. I wrote a list of what I want to let go of, burned the list, and wrote a list of dreams and goals that I want to manifest. This moon is about release and renewal. Continue reading “The Practice: Part 3”

The Road: Healing, Process & New Moon In Taurus

Last night it poured, a heavy, steady rain, bringing relief from the intense heat we’ve had here in Belize during the hottest time of the year. I woke up this morning to quiet drizzle and the smell of cooling earth. As I sat outside drinking coffee on the wooden bench in front of my apartment, I noticed how much greener and lush the plants and trees looked, replenished and restored. I’m feeling this shift into rainy season, slow and subtle. It signals the arrival of a new cycle, carrying with it a freshness of perspective.
